Newark Airport to Manhattan: NJ Transit, PATH, Taxi or Ride-Hail?
Newark is in New Jersey, but for many Manhattan destinations it is a very workable airport. Rail is usually the most predictable choice when traffic is heavy; a car is simpler when convenience matters more.

Included in many airport rail tickets; verify your ticket before travel.
A common direct destination for NJ Transit trains from the airport station.
AirTrain + NJ Transit
AirTrain connects airport terminals with Newark Liberty International Airport Station. From there, NJ Transit Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line trains provide service toward Newark Penn Station and New York Penn Station.
If you buy a ticket to or from Newark Airport Station, the airport access component is normally incorporated into the rail ticket. Keep the ticket available for the fare gates.
About the AirTrain access fee
NJ Transit states that the AirTrain access fee is $8.50 when it is not already encoded in an eligible rail ticket. Children 11 and under are exempt from the access fee.
Because fare structures can change, check the NJ Transit trip planner for the exact fare from your origin or destination before travel.
Taxi or ride-hail
A car removes the rail transfer and takes you directly to your hotel, which can be valuable after a long flight. The downside is that you are crossing a heavily trafficked metro area and tunnel/bridge congestion can make the trip unpredictable.
Always compare the live quoted fare and estimated travel time rather than assuming a car will be faster.
What about PATH?
PATH can be useful in broader Newark-to-New York journeys, but Newark Airport itself is not a PATH station. From the airport, NJ Transit rail is generally the more direct public-transport starting point for Manhattan.
Best choice by situation
- Penn Station area: NJ Transit rail is usually straightforward
- Heavy luggage: compare a car with the transfer effort
- Rush hour: rail offers more predictable timing
- Multiple travelers: compare the group car fare with total rail tickets
