JFK Airport to Manhattan: AirTrain, Subway, LIRR or Taxi?
There is no single best JFK transfer. The right choice depends on where in Manhattan you are going, how much luggage you have and whether you value the lowest cost, a faster rail trip or door-to-door simplicity.

AirTrain + subway
AirTrain connects JFK terminals with Jamaica Station and Howard Beach. From Jamaica, subway connections include the E, J and Z; from Howard Beach, the A train provides another route toward Brooklyn and Manhattan.
This is usually the lowest-cost mainstream option. It is especially practical if your hotel is close to the E or A line and you can manage stairs, elevators and luggage through transfers.
AirTrain + Long Island Rail Road
At Jamaica Station, the Long Island Rail Road offers a faster rail connection toward Manhattan than the subway for many trips. It can be particularly useful for Penn Station or Grand Central access, depending on the service you choose.
The trade-off is cost: you pay the AirTrain component plus a separate LIRR fare.
Taxi or ride-hail
A car is the simplest option when you have several bags, young children, mobility needs or a destination that is awkward by rail. It can also make financial sense for a group once the fare is shared.
Road traffic is the major variable. A smooth off-peak journey and a rush-hour journey can feel like completely different transfers.
Which route should you choose?
- Midtown near Penn Station: compare AirTrain + LIRR with a car
- Midtown East: Jamaica + LIRR to Grand Central can be attractive
- Downtown: AirTrain + subway may require fewer decisions than crossing Midtown after the train
- Heavy luggage or 3–4 travelers: compare the total car fare, not just the per-person rail price
Before you leave the terminal
Check live rail and subway service before committing to a route. Construction, overnight changes or a disrupted line can change the best option.
JFK terminal and roadway arrangements can also change during the airport redevelopment, so follow current airport signage for taxi and ride-hail pickup locations.
