NYC Restaurant Bill Calculator
Enter the pre-tax restaurant subtotal, choose how you want to calculate the tip and split the final bill between diners. The tool separately shows sales tax, tip and the estimated amount per person.
Start with the pre-tax subtotal
Use the food-and-drink subtotal before sales tax when it is available on the check. The calculator then applies the standard 8.875% New York City sales tax to that amount.
If a restaurant has already added a service charge, do not automatically treat that charge as the same thing as your chosen gratuity. Read the bill before adding another tip.
Choose whether to tip before or after tax
People use both approaches. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal produces a slightly lower gratuity; tipping on the subtotal plus sales tax produces a slightly higher one.
The calculator supports both so it can match the way you prefer to calculate rather than forcing a single etiquette rule.
Splitting the bill
The per-person result divides the full estimated total evenly. If diners ordered very different amounts, use the total as a check on the restaurant bill and split individual items separately.
